本书主要阐释在新媒体兴盛的传播时代，大众如何有效运用网络互助论坛、社交媒体等各类线上平台来寻求社会支持和帮助。现代人的生活中充满了各种压力和挑战，需要合适的渠道排解压力和寻求支持。新媒体的蓬勃发展为大众提供了寻求社会支持的新途径。本书首先将构建网络大众人际传播的社会支持理论框架，探讨新媒体的特殊性和线上社会支持的优势、比较线上支持和线下支持的差异性。然后通过问卷和实验等实证研究数据进一步阐释媒介特性和大众心理对线上社会支持的传播途径以及传播效果产生的影响，为大众寻求线上社会支持提供理论及实践的指导。
