本书共20课，内容包括靠前船员常用的问候、道别、接待、问路、通话、购物、乘机、住宿等英语基本会话，船上实际的杨帆出航、轮机实习、轮机值班、轮机例行工作等英语初步应用，船员如何书写电子邮件、如何进行自我推介、家庭与家乡情况描述的英语实用应对。在介绍这些实用英语基础的过程中，是以句子训练、图例、图解为主，归纳总结语音、语言现象与规律，尽量避免使用过多的传统英语语音与语法术语，引导学生掌握入门英语。本书为了航海类中等职业学校的远洋轮机（航海捕捞）中专班及三二连读班的一年级学生所编。这对广大船员来说，也是一本掌握初级英语不错的参考书。
