本教材以训练阅读技巧为先导、开展主题阅读为渠道、形成自主阅读为核心、培养独立思考能力为目标，旨在潜移默化中提高学生自主学习的能力。尤其在教学理念上作了大胆创新，引入了探究式学习和“泛读—分析性阅读”相结合的理念。教材分为两大板块：阅读基础、实用泛读与分析性阅读，前者关注阅读技巧，后者围绕东西方文学、文化、经济、社会、科技等不同话题展开，注重阅读技巧的整合和阅读能力的综合培养。
