《美国华裔文学作品选》以历史为发展脉络，精选了30位美国华裔作家的作品，并以作家的出生年代为顺序进行编目排列。
作品选力图反映美国华裔文学一百多年间的发展历程和变化。深刻反映抗争、身份认同与文化冲突所构成的华裔文学传统的重要议题。作品选努力求“新”，体现更大的兼容性。我们选取了多位新生代作家/后起之秀（如60后谢耀、姜峯楠、张纯如，70后李翊云、刘宇昆，80后伍绮诗、黄颐铭、林韬等），以彰显华裔文学很近几十年的发展与繁荣，同时也表明华裔文学生机勃勃，后继有人。同时，对于老一代作家，不仅选其经典之作，也特意选取他们晚近的“新”作品，反映他们老骥伏枥、笔耕不辍的精神，这种精神成为华裔文学向前发展的动力。
