本书为“当代外语研究论丛”之一，调查了英国国家语料库(BNC)中优选频的50个身体部位词作为修辞性词素（概念隐喻）出现的3378类复合词，量化分析了其在英语复合词靠前位置和第二位置的分布规律。分析发现四种不同的语义属性与两个位置之间具有显著的相关性，这说明英语修辞复合词释义具有一定结构基础。因此，概念隐喻除了普通认知规律以外，还体现了具体语言结构的相对性。
