本书源于2005-2015年间对中国大城市中心步行区的观察与研究成果,旨在批判性地分析中国大城市在近30年间由工业社会向消费社会的转型过程中其中心步行区的历史演变、空间形态与公共用途。本书首先理论性地综述了"消费主义"与城市转型的内在关联,论述了消费社会对城市空间再生产的本质影响,重点阐释了对在消费主义"两面性"下城市公共空间"公共性"的辩证性认知。然后对中国大城市中心区物质与社会空间形态进行了总体性的回顾,对中国城市公共空间的"公共性"建立了基于独特历史文脉的评价框架。然后选取北京、上海、南京、哈尔滨4个大城市,对其中心步行区近30年间的发展与变化进行了描绘与剖析;此后重点对西部直辖市重庆的中心步行区展开了基于实证观察的分析,对其中-微观尺度的空间形态与公共用途进行了深入述评。在前述所有论述基础上,很后对中国大城市中心步行区的"公共性"给出批判性的评价,同时对其空间管理与设计策略及措施给予了具体的建议。
